Formia.

Formia, is an harbor small town of 37.000 residents. The most antique sections, of Roman and middle ages architecture are situated on the highest places, where as the more recent sections dwell on cost. Old Italic headquarters , Formia was an important center of the Aurunca civilization, confederated with an other significative town. Formia suffered the greek colonization and probably was the headquarters of the Etrusque commerce. Numerous ruins and ancient rome residences are observable along the Appia : the Ciceron sepulcher (I century a.C.),The Tulliola sepulcher, his daughter, and the Roman fontain of Saint Remigio.

A series of rooms under "the villa" in Formia that houses the old fishery production rooms. It is quite spooky inside and has quite a history according to the custodian of the day.......

It is only open one Sunday per month (if I remember correctly), but a lot of information is to be had as well as gaining a walk through the various rooms and a description of how they were used. Centrally situated is an old access to the top (villa above) I think that it comes out at one of the circular garden beds there.......anyway it is supposed to have been used as some quick exit, back in the days when.

The external fishery can be seen to the left of this photo (now can be seen on my Lazio travelogue)..........

Could form the basis of a wonderful and romantic adventure story set amongst the Roman Consuls who used to holiday in the area and indeed kept villas around for that purpose.....There I go again off on a tangent.
